The Climbable Ruins

“You could tell her she has a nice smile?” Sam asked, his arms spread out for balance as he carefully walked heel to toe along the wall, not caring about the steep drop below him.

“Maybe,” The thing was, he wasn’t sure she had a nice smile. It had been an entire year since he saw her last and while her face in his mind was beautiful, it had also began to fade. He actually wasn’t sure how much of her features had distorted over time, his brain editing out all her imperfections.

“Or nice hair?” His friend moved closer to the edge of the building, and Aidan ’s stomach seemed to overturn. Since he was a child he had hated heights, but somehow landed himself a best friend who seemed to relish in the danger of being tens of feet from the ground, in abandoned buildings where no one would notice or care if you fell.

“I don’t remember her hair being that nice.”

He laughed at that, “It’s that brutal honesty that girls really appreciate.”

Sam must have realised that he was no longer looking at him, and so, being a supportive friend, moved closer to the edge, until his heels were the only thing keeping his footing.

“Stop.” Even at the corner of his eye, Aidan could see his friend’s wicked grin.

“Look at me then I will.”

Doing what he was told, in the hopes his friend would keep his promise and put two feet back on stable ground, Aidan turned to face him. Immediately, he regretted it. Sam had grabbed a bit of rail from the partially collapsed floor above them. Twisting his whole body towards him, he gradually leaned back until most of body was hanging over the stone roof.

“Please don’t,” He knew what was coming. His friend sometimes liked to believe he was an acrobat. “Please.”

Then Sam withdrew an arm, extending it over the open drop. Next was the leg, which he stretched out until less than half his body remained on the building.

“I don’t know why you are so afraid of heights.” Sam half shouted, as though roaring into the wind of the open air.

“I don’t know why you aren’t afraid of falling.”

“I would only fall if I let go.” Sam placed a foot back onto land, then, once he had found his footing, moved to a seating position. At least now, he was on stable ground, even if the sight of his legs swinging from the edge of the building made Aidan ’s stomach turn.

I have no idea what this is, it just kinda came into my head.  Genuinely don’t know where it’s going but it might be fun to continue? Tell me if you want more! We can see where it goes together lol
(I've had a busy day, I went for lunch at a fancy golf club then dramatically slipped and fell on the golf course and was covered in mud. I think a mark of a good day is when you can be freezing, caked in slimy dirt and still laugh about it. There is a photo of our footsteps kind of running towards the bunker on the golf course and all of a sudden my footsteps become a huge line from where I fell.

Anyway, that may explain the abruptness of this story, genuinely feel it's a bit empty, but I haven't posted in a while so here you go! One day I might have a story for it or maybe /you/ do, either way enjoy this for now and we will see what comes of it.

Originally my stories are posted on instagram, but the 300 word limit is a little confining so I come here to post everything I've written and a little bit extra!
