"My Colourful Christmas" - BBC Radio

"There is something magical about school before the holidays...."

A bit of a different post today! As I'm sure you've seen on twitter/Instagram, I wrote a Christmas monologue for the Ink Festival that was featured on BBC Radio Suffolk. It's probably one of the coolest things I've done, and I'm really thankful for the opportunity.

I don't think I can post the full story here (but it's still available to hear, I have a link up on my instagram)

But I wanted to do what I normally do on this blog and add some behind the scenes fun facts, because I find it interesting, and I hope you do too:

- whenever I write in first person I usually write as a boy and it’s interesting to see how it’s read as a girl narrating, and how the actress reading it solidifies it as a girl's perspective
- I’m really bad at coming up with surnames and I was watching Brooklyn 99 and used a name from that as a placeholder and didn’t realise until I heard it read back to me (Mr Santiago)
- the whole thing is very stream of consciousness and there is a sentence that’s like 3 lines long and I find impossible to read but flows SO well thanks to the incredible actress (Kitty Dunham) reading it!
- I actually hate soup and I’m putting this here because it’s important to me that you know, because this is such a pro-soup story and I'm very anti-soup
- my favourite line was cut:

“then to make matters worse my mum pressed my lower abdomen and it hurt the way I imagined it would hurt if someone stabbed me in the stomach with a burning hot knife”

(I just like the flow of it)

- the only bit in this story that’s true is the line about Elf because it was the only dvd my school had and to this day I’ve seen the first 50 minutes about 100 times and never seen the end (does he die? is Christmas saved? who knows!)
- I was so nervous doing that interview and I kept thinking about that one scene from Scooby Doo 2 (if you know....you know)

Thanks for listening and reading this v lengthy caption that is probably only interesting to me 😅

Hope you are having a lovely Christmas!
