Day 23: The Cold Floor
Megan had practically rolled out of bed, dreading the feel
of the cold air on her bare skin. Her blanket was still wrapped around her
shoulders when she quickly pulled on a pair of socks, then trousers. Normally
she would have lit the fire as soon as she awoke, but foolishly was too tired
last night to bother retrieving more wood.
“I hate waking up in the winter.” She said, walking
downstairs, finally dressed and ten minutes late for breakfast. The others were
huddled beneath blankets under a fire that Anna was currently trying to light.
“Why?” Patrick asked, as though her statement was the most
ridiculous thing he had ever heard. He had a blanket round his shoulders and
was clutching a hot cup of tea with two hands, holding the mug close to his
chest. On his feet were two slippers that looked incredibly worn, one with a
large hole in it, letting her see the thick woollen socks he had underneath. It
appeared that she wasn’t the only one struggling with the cold.
“The thought of stepping out onto the cold floor was just….I would
rather stay in bed.”
“Why not wear socks to bed so you don’t feel the floor then?”
“Because then my feet get too sweaty.”
“Get some slippers.”
“I can’t afford any right now.”
Patrick laughed. “If you aren’t willing to fix the problem
then you shouldn’t complain.” There was an arrogance to his voice, everything
he said carried with it a certain weight. He was the bluntest person she knew,
but she also knew him well enough to realise he never meant to be hurtful. That
he was too kind to intentionally cause pain.
“I don’t mind the cold.” Anna turned from the fire which had
begun to thrive on its own, without her fanning. “There is nothing better than
getting into a cold bed and feeling it slowly warm up.”
“Yes, there is, literally anything is better than that.” She
said, surprised that anyone could find the idea of a cold mattress appealing.
Before anyone could respond, Sam appeared with the food, and
they forgot what they were even discussing. It felt like days since they had eaten
last so seeing the amount of bread, meats and cheeses that had been laid out
was enough to make them all silent as they wolfed it down.
She went to bed that night early, and remembered to fill the
fireplace with wood, and leave a firelighter nearby, so she could jump out of
bed and light it first thing. It was cozy as she snuggled into the covers,
thinking about the day they had, and it didn’t take her long to fall into a
deep sleep.
After a peaceful sleep, she awoke to a cool breeze upon her
face, she was attempting to pluck up the courage to run for the fire, and had
swung her legs over the bed when she saw them.
A pair of worn, ragged brown slippers with a hole in the
toe.
Left out just for her.

So Fun Fact about this post.
Like the one previously, this one is also something to do with my Secret Project. I can't get it out of my head, and this was a scene that was coming for a long time. Maybe if you read the first Secret Project (a 300 page word document that I don't want to jinx by calling it anything other than a Long Story) I can reveal who these characters are meant to be. But until then, I'll leave you with their fake names, living in a world that is not their own.
Also, I have a task for you!
This, as I mentioned is basically fanfiction of my Secret Project, and I've done this with two stories in the past. I am actually really curious if you noticed while reading, of if there is anything about a character in this story that matches with a character in another. Obviously, it would be just for my own curiosity cause I don't think it impacts the reading in anyway.
In fact it probably works better as two pieces on their own.
(I can't wait till people read my Secret Project so I can reveal a lot of secrets that are laid out on this blog. There is A Lot of them, and I'm almost bursting ready to tell someone lol)
This was Day 23 of my NaNoWriMo project where I am writing a new short story every day in November! Originally all of these were posted to instagram, but the 300 word limit was a little confining so I've come here to post everything I've written and a little bit more!
