Day 5: Fireworks

The noises show no sign of stopping. A banging that reverberates through my body, mimicking the rhythm of my rapidly beating heart.

It hurts. A weight against my chest, as though something has been fired at me, but I look around the crowds, at my brother, at his friends, and see only smiles light up by reds and yellows and greens.

“I don’t like it.” I whisper to Mathew beside me. It was his idea to bring me here. We always spent fireworks day together and I wanted to stay home and roast marshmallows, but he was a teenager now so had to hang out with his friends. His friends who mostly ignored me.

“Give it a few minutes.”

“Can I hold your hand?”

“No.” He hisses and I try not to tear up as the noises pound again in my head.

But something rests itself on my shoulder. A comforting presence. I turn to my brother, but he is now feet away, as though embarrassed to be beside me.

No, it’s not Mathew’s hand.

I turn to find one of my brother’s friends smiling down at me.

“I didn’t like them either when I was your age”

And suddenly the banging in my chest, the pounding in my head fades as everything inside me quietens.

This is loosely based on two things.

The first, is that fireworks always make me feel as if I'm under attack, and when I was a child I always imagined that was what was happening. I used to pretend I was The Doctor (from Doctor Who) and in the middle of a grand adventure where it was up to me to save the day from the big loud booming noises that I was sure where aliens.

The second, is that, just like my short story "Beneath the Mask," it is actually based on a few characters from something....longer I'm writing. It's 313 pages and I'm very excited for people to read it. I am still unsure about whether its weird or not to write fanfiction of your own characters, but I hope not because I really like this story.

This was Day 5 of my NaNoWriMo project where I am writing a new short story every day in November! Originally all of these were posted to instagram, but the 300 word limit was a little confining so I've come here to post everything I've written and a little bit more!
