Day 26: Infiltrating the Mansion
A woman with pale skin and red lips greeted them with a smile. She bowed low, and without waiting for a response, led them inside. Whoever had requested them here certainly had exquisite taste. There were rows of marble columns erected on both sides of them, and paintings of half-naked men besting mythical monsters in battle. Even the floor seemed excessive, mosaic tiles, forming different patterns and pictures, so every step led to a different piece of art. It was incredible, and Alannah would have been jealous if she was not currently focused on the mission at hand. Instead of admiring the art, she was focused on counting the steps from the entrance to wherever the woman was leading them. This information, could be vital to their survival.
“Your rooms,” The woman led them to a set of double doors. She stood there, motionless as the two entered, and Alannah was sure the woman was still outside when the door closed.
“That’s the smallest bodyguard I’ve seen.” Ben snorted.
He made a good point, ordinarily the person waiting outside their rooms was taller, broader, and armed to the teeth with weapons. The slim woman with her hair sitting in neat curls over a thin green robe was nothing compared to what they had faced. If this was indeed a trap, as these situations sometimes turned out to be, they would have no problem overpowering her and rushing for the exit.
“She isn’t a bodyguard. Servant or spy maybe, but absolutely not a bodyguard.”
“Whatever, I would rather have her spy on us than that giant we had lurking outside our rooms in Rothal.”
“Ideally, I would rather just not be spied on.” Alannah muttered, beginning to search the room for any spyholes or signs of danger. Ben joined in, lifting paintings from the wall, checking beneath shelves for crawlspaces or loose panelling. They spent a good ten minutes ensuring all holes (including the gap between the door and the floor) were sealed and the window covered by an extra duvet they had found when ransacking the wardrobe
“Should we get changed?” Ben sat on the edge of his bed, using one of the knives that were strapped to his chest to pick at his nails.
“We don’t know when we are going to get called on, or what this man wants from us.”
“It’s not that hard to guess. Rich man, who has everything he ever desired, hires two assassins. I’m guessing it’s some competitor he wants rid of.”
“Shut up!” She hissed through gritted teeth, glancing to the door. They had sealed up the gaps but for all she knew, the woman had her ear pressed against the other side.
"What have I said that she doesn't already know? She saw our weapons, even if she didn't know before opening the door, she knows now."
"You don't know that."
"Well with knives strapped to our chests she hardly thinks we are here to paint the ceiling does she!"

I am going to finish this later !! I don't know where it came from, but it's Day 26 and I feel any rules I had are gone so have this random assassin story that popped into my head !! I actually have a good ending for this but I don't have time to write in now, it'll either go up as Day 27 or I'll just edit it in here and pretend I gave you all a finished piece for the first time in 3 days lmao
Real talk: I'm actually kind of bummed I only have four more days left of this. It was super fun and I'm going to miss writing something new every day. As much as I enjoy writing my Secret Project, delving into new things really inspired me and gave me a weird sense of purpose every day. Even when I was having a low day, I managed to write something, and I love, love, LOVE having that push !
I'll miss it, and I think I plan on having a writing Thursday or something where I just write something new every Thursday cause why not !!
This was Day 26 of my NaNoWriMo project where I am writing a new short story every day in November! Originally all of these were posted to instagram, but the 300 word limit was a little confining so I've come here to post everything I've written and a little bit more!
